King Charles marks his 76th birthday with official duties and celebrations.

King Charles III is set to celebrate his 76th birthday by continuing his commitment to addressing food waste and poverty through the Coronation Food Project. On his birthday, he will be launching two food distribution hubs designed to redirect surplus food to food banks, schools, and community centers.

The project, which was initially launched on the King’s birthday last year, has already made significant progress in reducing food waste. To date, the initiative has saved the equivalent of 2.2 million meals by rescuing 940 tonnes of surplus food that would otherwise have been discarded.

The first hub will be located in south London, where charities like the Felix Project and FareShare can collect food from sources such as supermarkets and the catering industry. These organizations will then distribute the high-quality, unsold food to individuals and community groups facing food poverty. The King will personally visit this hub and attend a “surplus-food festival,” where he will meet people who have benefited from the project.

The second hub will be opened virtually on Merseyside, further expanding the project’s reach and impact. The goal of these distribution centers is to increase the amount of surplus food saved and redistributed to those in need.

Despite ongoing cancer treatment, King Charles remains committed to his royal duties and continues to work actively. Royal aides have emphasized that he wants to maintain his focus on important initiatives like the Coronation Food Project.

Interestingly, the King’s birthday celebrations also included a touch of glamour when he attended the premiere of Gladiator II on Wednesday. The event featured a band outside Buckingham Palace playing movie themes from Star Wars and James Bond, with a playful nod to the King’s age with a reference to “agent 00-76.”

Queen Camilla was unable to attend the film screening, as she is currently recovering from a chest infection. At the Booker Prize awards on Tuesday, she commented that she believes she is “on the mend” but acknowledged that recovery takes time.

As the monarch continues his work, it’s worth noting that although King Charles has been on the throne for only two years, he is already the sixth longest-living British monarch. His dedication to public service and initiatives like the Coronation Food Project demonstrates his ongoing commitment to addressing social issues and supporting communities across the United Kingdom.

The food distribution hubs represent a practical approach to combating food waste and helping those experiencing food insecurity, reflecting the King’s long-standing interest in sustainability and social welfare.
