Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky believes the war with Russia will conclude more quickly under the incoming Trump administration, following a recent phone conversation with Donald Trump after his election victory. Zelensky expressed optimism about ending the conflict diplomatically, stating that the new White House team’s approach suggests the war could conclude sooner.
In an interview with Suspilne, a Ukrainian media outlet, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine “must do everything so that this war ends next year, ends through diplomatic means.” However, he also acknowledged the challenging battlefield situation, with Russian forces making advances.
The relationship between Trump and Zelensky has been historically complex. In 2019, Trump was impeached for allegedly pressuring Zelensky to investigate the Biden family. Despite past differences, Trump has consistently claimed to have a good relationship with the Ukrainian leader. During a September meeting in New York, Trump suggested he would quickly resolve the conflict, though he has not yet detailed his specific strategy.
