Russia advances near Kursk as Ukraine's counteroffensive struggles to make progress.

Russian Military Gains Momentum in Ukraine Conflict

The Russian military is experiencing significant territorial gains in Ukraine in 2024, marking a stark contrast to the previous year’s stalemate. According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russia has seized approximately 2,700 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory this year, nearly six times more than the 465 square kilometers gained in 2023.

The advances are particularly pronounced in eastern Ukraine, with key areas under pressure. Two critical regions experiencing Russian advances are Kupiansk in Kharkiv and Kurakhove in Donetsk. These strategic locations could potentially provide Russia with important logistical advantages. Dr. Marina Miron from Kings College London warned that the Ukrainian eastern front might collapse if Russia continues its current pace of advancement.

The territorial gains have come at a significant human cost. A BBC Russian analysis confirmed at least 78,329 Russian troops have been killed since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. Russian military tactics reportedly involve a “meat grinder” approach, sending waves of recruits to exhaust Ukrainian defenses.

Simultaneously, Ukraine’s surprise incursion into Russia’s Kursk region, initially seen as a morale-boosting operation, is now viewed by some experts as a “strategic catastrophe.” While the initial invasion caught Russia off-guard, Moscow has since deployed approximately 50,000 troops to reclaim the territory. Since October, Russian counter-attacks have regained 593 square kilometers in the border region.

The conflict’s dynamics are further complicated by potential changes in US foreign policy. President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to end the war quickly, raising uncertainties about future military aid to Ukraine. This political backdrop adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing conflict.

Ukraine’s strategic options appear increasingly limited. Some military analysts, like David Handelman, suggest Ukrainian troops are strategically withdrawing to preserve manpower and resources rather than facing a complete collapse.

The territorial control becomes crucial for potential future negotiations. Russia currently holds 110,649 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory, and experts like Dr. Miron believe this gives Russia a stronger negotiating position, especially with the anticipated shift in US administration.

In a recent development, Ukraine fired US-supplied long-range missiles into Russia for the first time, potentially attempting to maintain some leverage in potential future negotiations.

The conflict continues to evolve rapidly, with Russia showing increased military momentum. The combination of territorial gains, high Ukrainian casualties, and potential changes in international support suggest a challenging period ahead for Ukraine.

The situation remains fluid, with both sides continuing to fight for strategic advantages in what has become a prolonged and complex conflict.
