Gatwick Airport security detains two individuals after discovering suspicious package.

Gatwick Airport’s South Terminal was evacuated on Friday following reports of a suspicious package, causing significant disruption to travel plans for thousands of passengers. The terminal was shut at 10:55 GMT while an explosive ordnance disposal team worked to “make the package safe.”

Sussex Police temporarily detained two individuals in connection with the incident but later allowed them to continue their journeys. The terminal has since reopened, though passengers are experiencing continued delays and cancellations.

According to a Gatwick Airport spokesperson, approximately 40 flights were cancelled out of 240 scheduled flights. Travel journalist Simon Calder estimated that around 100,000 passengers were expected to fly in and out of the airport that day, with half of those passing through the South Terminal.

The evacuation left thousands of passengers stranded outside the terminal in near-freezing temperatures, with many expressing confusion and frustration. John Mather, who had just arrived from Costa Rica, complained about the lack of assistance from airport and security staff. He was forced to be bussed to the North Terminal and faced additional challenges getting home, including potentially having to walk to a nearby train station.

Other passengers shared similar experiences. Gabriele Lecce, who was hoping to fly to Rome, described being suddenly evacuated by police. Emily Fisher and her friends were among those forced to make alternative travel arrangements, spending £1,200 on new tickets to travel from a different airport.

The disruption caused significant inconvenience for travelers. Some, like 18-year-old Alaia trying to return to Barcelona, remained cautiously optimistic but worried about potential further delays. Train services to the airport were temporarily suspended but have since resumed.

Passengers were advised to check their flight status with their respective airlines. The airport recommended staying informed about potential changes to travel plans.

The incident highlighted the challenges of airport security and the impact of unexpected disruptions on travelers. Despite the initial uncertainty and inconvenience, authorities worked to resolve the situation and reopen the terminal as quickly as possible.

The South Terminal gradually returned to normal operations, with passengers carefully making their way through the facility. However, the day’s events served as a reminder of the complexities of modern air travel and the potential for sudden, unexpected interruptions.

Gatwick Airport continues to manage the aftermath of the incident, focusing on minimizing further disruption and ensuring passenger safety. Travelers are encouraged to remain patient and stay in close communication with their airlines about any potential changes to their travel plans.
