Israel Launches Massive Air Strike on Beirut, Killing Four
In the early hours of Saturday morning, Israel conducted a significant air strike on central Beirut, targeting a residential area and causing substantial destruction. The attack, which occurred around 04:00 local time, completely destroyed an eight-story building in the densely populated Basta district using five missiles.
According to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) and Hezbollah’s al-Manar media outlet, the strike resulted in four deaths and 23 injuries. Emergency teams searched the site in the dark, with footage revealing a massive crater and smoke rising from the collapsed building.
This latest attack is part of an ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah that escalated following the Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. In response to Hamas’s initial assault, Hezbollah, an Iran-backed group, began firing rockets into Israel in solidarity with Palestinians.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched a major offensive against Hezbollah in September, conducting air strikes and deploying troops into southern Lebanon. The conflict has been particularly devastating, with Lebanese authorities reporting over 3,500 deaths and more than one million people displaced from their homes.
Israel’s stated objective is to enable the return of approximately 60,000 residents who have been forced to leave their communities in northern Israel due to Hezbollah’s attacks. In recent months, Israeli strikes have targeted and killed several top Hezbollah members, including the group’s leader Hassan Nasrallah.
Diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict are ongoing. Earlier this week, US mediator Amos Hochstein visited both Israel and Lebanon in an attempt to broker a ceasefire. While Hochstein suggested some progress had been made, no specific details were publicly disclosed.
The Israeli military has not yet commented on the reported strikes, maintaining its typical stance of limited public communication during active military operations.
