Dramatic Rescue on Tasmania’s Franklin River: Tourist’s Leg Amputated During Complex Rescue Operation
A harrowing rescue unfolded on Tasmania’s Franklin River when an international tourist in his 60s became trapped between rocks during a kayaking trip, ultimately requiring a life-saving amputation to ensure his survival.
The incident occurred on Friday afternoon when the tourist was kayaking with a group of 10 other travelers in the remote south-west region of Tasmania. While scouting the area on shore, he slipped and became wedged in a rock crevice amid rapidly moving water.
Emergency services were initially alerted when the man’s smartwatch automatically called for assistance. What followed was an extraordinarily challenging 20-hour rescue operation that tested the limits of emergency responders.
Throughout the ordeal, the tourist remained partially submerged in water, with rescuers quickly recognizing the critical nature of his situation. Acting Assistant Commissioner Doug Oosterloo of Tasmania Police emphasized that had the man remained in his original position, he would not have survived.
Rescue teams made multiple attempts to free the man overnight, but these efforts proved unsuccessful. As the tourist’s condition continued to deteriorate, medical professionals made the difficult “life or death” decision to amputate his leg. This decision was made in direct consultation with the patient and was deemed necessary to extract him from the treacherous location.
The rescue operation was described as “extremely challenging and technical,” requiring incredible coordination and skill. After the amputation, the man was successfully winched from the dangerous site and airlifted to a hospital, where he is currently in critical condition.
Oosterloo noted that while the kayaker was well-prepared for the expedition, he was not equipped to withstand the extended exposure to the harsh conditions – extremely cold temperatures and powerful water currents.
The other 10 travelers in the kayaking group were simultaneously airlifted from the area. Police plan to interview them to understand the precise circumstances that led to the accident.
