Storm Bert: Deadly flooding strikes, warnings issued across affected regions

Storm Bert Continues to Cause Widespread Disruption Across the UK

Storm Bert has brought significant challenges to the United Kingdom, with numerous flood warnings, severe weather conditions, and tragic consequences. A man in his 60s tragically died on Saturday after a tree struck his car near Winchester, highlighting the storm’s dangerous impact.

As of Sunday morning, an extensive number of flood warnings and alerts were in place across the country. Specifically, there were 56 flood warnings in England, 36 in Wales, and four in Scotland. Additionally, 169 flood alerts were active in England, 36 in Wales, and six in Scotland. The south-west and north-west regions of England, along with Wales, are expected to be the most severely affected by flooding.

Multiple waterways are under flood warnings, including the River Teign in Devon, the River Frome in Dorset, and the Rochdale Canal in West Yorkshire. The storm has caused widespread disruption, with around 26,000 properties experiencing power outages across the UK.

Rescue operations have been ongoing in various locations. In Walsall, West Midlands Fire Service rescued a person from a car stranded in floodwater. In Denbighshire, north Wales, emergency services rescued ten people (five adults and five children) from a house flooded with debris following a landslide. North Wales Fire and Rescue Service reported significant flooding in the area, sharing footage of floodwater rushing through a country lane.

Yellow weather warnings for wind and rain remain in effect for western parts of Scotland and Wales, south-east England, and Northern Ireland on Sunday. Homes in counties Down and Tyrone in Northern Ireland have already experienced flooding.

The storm’s impact extends beyond flooding. Scotland’s central belt was hit by more snow than anticipated on Saturday, causing road disruptions. The M8 experienced long traffic jams, and two main routes south – the M74 and A68 – were temporarily closed due to accidents. Milder temperatures are now causing snow in northern England and Scotland to melt, potentially creating additional challenges.

Transportation has also been significantly affected. Avanti West Coast cancelled its service between Edinburgh and Carlisle for an entire day, with the next direct service from Carlisle not scheduled until Sunday afternoon. Train journeys to and from Manchester Piccadilly were disrupted on Saturday evening due to flooding between Macclesfield and Stoke-on-Trent.

Residents and travelers are advised to stay informed about current weather conditions, follow local emergency guidance, and take necessary precautions. The ongoing storm continues to pose risks across multiple regions of the United Kingdom.
