BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme Announces Diverse Guest Editors for Christmas Period

The BBC has revealed an exciting lineup of six guest editors who will shape the Today programme’s episodes during the festive season, bringing unique perspectives and personal interests to the renowned news programme.

The distinguished guest editors include Dame Laura Kenny, the UK’s most decorated female Olympian, author Frank Cottrell Boyce, former chancellor Sir Sajid Javid, TV presenter Baroness Floella Benjamin, adventurer Dwayne Fields, and neuroscientist Professor Irene Tracey.

Each guest editor will focus on topics close to their heart during their designated episode. Frank Cottrell Boyce, the current children’s laureate, will explore the importance of reading and its impact on children’s brain development on Christmas Eve. Dwayne Fields will use Boxing Day to highlight homelessness and community volunteering.

Sir Sajid Javid’s December 27th programme will delve into artificial intelligence’s benefits and risks, while also featuring a segment on the classic BBC children’s show Grange Hill. Professor Irene Tracey will investigate chronic pain relief and universities’ societal roles on December 28th.

Baroness Floella Benjamin will examine children’s television quality and the shift from public service broadcasters to online platforms on December 30th. Dame Laura Kenny will close the series on New Year’s Eve, focusing on elite sports’ impact on women’s bodies, fertility challenges, and physical education in schools.

This guest editing tradition is not new for the Today programme, which has been inviting public figures to shape its content during the holiday season for over two decades. Previous notable guest editors have included high-profile personalities such as Angelina Jolie, Stephen Hawking, Bono, Margaret Atwood, David Hockney, Raheem Sterling, Greta Thunberg, Carey Mulligan, Jamie Oliver, and Ellie Goulding.

Today programme editor Owenna Griffiths expressed enthusiasm about the lineup, stating, “Every year I look forward to the fresh ideas, hidden stories and unexpected perspectives the guest editors bring to Today.
