Gregg Wallace, a well-known television presenter, has stepped away from hosting MasterChef while allegations of historical misconduct are being investigated by the show’s production company, Banijay UK.
BBC News sent a letter to Wallace’s representatives detailing allegations from 13 people who worked with him across various shows over a 17-year period. These allegations include inappropriate and sexually charged comments and behavior.
Broadcaster Kirsty Wark, a former Celebrity MasterChef contestant, reported that Wallace told “sexualised” jokes during filming. Other allegations include Wallace talking openly about his sex life, taking off his top in front of a female worker, and making inappropriate comments to junior female colleagues.
The specific allegations range from Wallace telling stories of a sexual nature in front of contestants and crew to making explicit personal remarks. BBC News discovered that Wallace was previously warned by the BBC after a complaint in 2018, but further incidents have since emerged.
Banijay UK has launched an external investigation into these historical allegations. In an official statement, the production company emphasized their commitment to investigating the claims thoroughly and maintaining a safe working environment. They noted that while the complainants have not directly raised issues with show producers, they feel it is appropriate to conduct an impartial review.
Wallace’s lawyers have categorically denied the allegations, stating that it is “entirely false” that he engages in sexually harassing behavior. The 60-year-old presenter is reportedly committed to fully cooperating with the investigation.
The BBC has also responded, stating that they take such issues seriously and have robust processes in place to address them. They emphasized that behavior falling below their expected standards will not be tolerated.
Wallace has been a prominent television personality, presenting MasterChef alongside John Torode since 2005 and hosting various other shows including Saturday Kitchen, Eat Well For Less, and Inside The Factory. He was recognized in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2022 for his services to food and charity.
The PA news agency reported that recorded episodes of MasterChef: The Professionals featuring Wallace will continue to air as planned, with the next episode scheduled for Thursday evening.
Wallace, who has two children from a previous relationship and a son with his wife Anne-Marie Sterpini, whom he married in 2016, will temporarily step back from his MasterChef role during the investigation.
Banijay UK has provided a confidential method for anyone with concerns to come forward, encouraging individuals to use their speak-up platform to report any issues.
The investigation is ongoing, and the full details of the allegations and potential consequences remain to be determined.
