Mikey Way's brother Bob Bryar, ex-MCR drummer, passes away at 44.

Bob Bryar, the former drummer of the iconic rock band My Chemical Romance (MCR), has passed away at the age of 44 at his home in Tennessee. The band’s spokesperson has requested patience and understanding as they process the news of his death.

Bryar was a significant figure in MCR’s history, serving as their longest-serving drummer from 2004 to 2010. His journey with the band began uniquely when he was working as a sound engineer for a support band on an MCR tour. After befriending the band members, he replaced the original drummer, Matt Pelissier.

During his time with MCR, Bryar played a crucial role in the band’s musical development. He helped write songs for their acclaimed album “The Black Parade,” which was lauded by NPR Music as a “defining album.” Born in Chicago, Illinois, Bryar had studied sound engineering at the University of Florida before joining the band.

However, Bryar’s tenure with MCR was not without challenges. In 2006, he suffered severe third-degree burns while on a music video set, which led to a serious staph infection. The band cancelled multiple shows to support his recovery, and he faced ongoing health complications. By November 2007, he began experiencing wrist issues, which temporarily led to his replacement during their world tour.

In 2010, the band announced Bryar’s departure, describing it as a “painful decision.” Despite leaving the group, he maintained five songwriting credits on their fourth studio album. After his time with MCR, Bryar gradually withdrew from the music scene, officially retiring in 2021. During his retirement, he auctioned off band memorabilia to support various animal charities, citing persistent wrist problems as the reason for his departure.

MCR, which had originally split up in 2013, reunited in 2019 and is scheduled to embark on a US stadium tour in 2025. The band’s journey has been marked by periods of separation and reunion, with Bryar being an integral part of their most critically acclaimed era.

Bryar’s contribution to MCR extended beyond his drumming skills. He was instrumental in shaping the band’s sound during a pivotal period in their career, particularly during the creation of “The Black Parade,” an album that significantly impacted the alternative rock scene.

The news of his passing has undoubtedly resonated with fans and fellow musicians, marking the end of an era for one of the most influential rock bands of the early 2000s. Bob Bryar’s legacy in the music world, particularly with My Chemical Romance, remains significant and memorable.
