Renowned British actor Timothy West has passed away at the age of 90, as announced by his family. A versatile performer with a distinguished career spanning stage and screen, West was known for his roles in numerous television shows and theatrical productions.
Born in 1934 in Bradford to actor parents Lockwood West and Olive Carleton-Crowe, Timothy West began his entertainment career as an assistant stage manager at the Wimbledon Theatre. He rose to prominence in the 1960s and 1970s, particularly notable for his BBC adaptations of Richard II and Edward II, which he had previously performed on stage to critical acclaim.
Throughout his extensive career, West appeared in a wide range of television productions. He was memorable in the 1980s comedy-drama Brass, playing the ruthless businessman Bradley Hardacre. More recently, he featured in popular sitcom Not Going Out as Geoffrey, and made appearances in long-running soap operas Coronation Street and EastEnders.
West was particularly known for his portrayals of historical figures, most notably Winston Churchill, whom he played three times in different productions between 1979 and 1995. In 2019, he participated in a recreation of missing Dad’s Army episodes, playing Private Godfrey. He was also a celebrated Shakespearean actor, performing King Lear multiple times.
The actor was married to Fawlty Towers star Prunella Scales for 61 years, and the couple was well-known for their Channel 4 series Great Canal Journeys, which ran for 10 seasons. Their relationship was particularly noted for West’s devoted care of Scales after she developed Alzheimer’s.
In their statement, West’s children – Juliet, Samuel, and Joseph – described their father as having lived “a long and extraordinary life on and off the stage”. They mentioned that he leaves behind a sister, a daughter, two sons, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Numerous public figures paid tribute to West. Broadcaster Piers Morgan highlighted West’s profound devotion to his wife, while BBC Radio 4 presenter David Aaronovitch described him as “a blessing in real life”. Former EastEnders actress Tracy-Ann Oberman called him “the most wonderful actor and human being”.
West died peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by friends and family. His family expressed gratitude to the NHS staff at St George’s Hospital in Tooting and Avery Wandsworth for their care during his final days.
