Gary Lineker, a prominent sports broadcaster and former England footballer, has stepped down as co-presenter of the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year ceremony. This decision comes shortly after the announcement that he will be leaving Match of the Day at the end of the current season.
The annual Sports Personality of the Year ceremony, which recognizes the UK’s top sportsperson based on public voting, marked Lineker’s final appearance last year during its 70th anniversary. His last presentation was alongside fellow sports presenters Clare Balding, Gabby Logan, and Alex Scott, with England goalkeeper Mary Earps being crowned the 2023 winner.
Despite stepping back from the Sports Personality of the Year show, Lineker has signed a contract extension with the BBC that will keep him involved with the network through the 2026 men’s World Cup. He will also continue to front the BBC’s coverage of next season’s FA Cup, ensuring his continued presence in sports broadcasting.

He will continue with the MOTD Top Ten podcast and will now host The Rest is Football podcast on BBC Sounds. This popular podcast, which he co-produces through Goalhanger productions, features Lineker alongside fellow football personalities Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, discussing current football news and sharing personal career stories.
