A new BBC documentary features UN ambassadors recounting the moment they learned of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This revelation came during an emergency UN Security Council meeting aimed at preventing such a conflict escalation. Vasily Nebenzya, Russia’s ambassador to the UN, admits he was taken by surprise. Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary General, expressed his disappointment, stating, “The main reason for the UN is to maintain peace.. when you have a permanent member of the Security Council, invading another country… you see your mission crumbling.” The documentary, Putin vs the West: At War, can be viewed on BBC iPlayer on BBC Two at 21:00 on Monday 29 January.
