BT Group to repurpose old street cabinets as electric vehicle charging stations

BT Group plans to convert old green street cabinets into electric vehicle (EV) charging points in an effort to address the shortage of charging infrastructure in the UK. The metal cabinets, traditionally used for broadband and phone cabling, will be retrofitted with devices that enable renewable energy to be shared with a charge point. The first converted cabinet will be installed in Scotland as part of a pilot programme, with the potential to convert up to 60,000 cabinets across the country. The initiative aims to increase the number of charging points from 50,000 to 300,000 by 2030.
