Leader of Iran-aligned militia in Baghdad killed in drone strike

A senior commander of the Iran-backed militia, Kataib Hezbollah, was targeted and killed in a US drone strike in Baghdad, according to a US official. The drone attack on a vehicle resulted in the death of at least three people, including the leader of Kataib Hezbollah. The US holds this Iranian-aligned group responsible for an attack that claimed the lives of three American troops. Despite Kataib Hezbollah announcing a suspension of attacks on US troops last month, the group was targeted in Baghdad’s eastern Mashtal neighbourhood. The operation was carried out by a drone, as confirmed by a senior US defence official. The attack also hit other Iran-supported groups. The slain Kataib Hezbollah commander was in charge of operations in Syria. This attack follows recent US airstrikes on militia positions in Iraq and Syria, which were in retaliation to a deadly attack on a US base in Jordan.
