Law enforcement authorities have taken control of an online site operated by the criminal gang LockBit, known for organizing ransomware cyber attacks. The site, which offers services to compromise computer networks and hold data for ransom, displayed a message stating it is now under the control of the National Crime Agency of the UK, in collaboration with the FBI and the international law enforcement task force ‘Operation Cronos’. The operation involved the National Crime Agency, FBI, Europol, and other international police agencies. LockBit has been identified as a significant threat by the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre and partner agencies worldwide. The group has been responsible for high-profile hacks, including targeting the UK’s Royal Mail in 2023. LockBit profits by extorting victims with stolen data. Originally discovered in 2020, some analysts believe LockBit may be based in Russia.
